This presentation covers what you need to know to evaluate sales proposals, WLAN designs, and performance claims for 802.11a/b/g/n WLANS. Ways to reduce interference from nearby networks and common misunderstandings about bandwidth will be discussed. This year Microsoft will roll out two key products with more changes than any of their products in the last 10 years.  Vista will replace Windows XP and Office 2007 will replace Office 2003.  Both products have tremendous improvements – it isn’t business as usual.  Microsoft’s Chris Henley will discuss the revolutionary changes in Vista – what it means to your productivity, security, and ability to connect and collaborate.  There are also new convenience and fun features.  Chris can also discuss the new Office features.

Wednesday, May 3:  FedEx Flight Simulator
The next chapter meeting of the Association of Information Technology Professionals is the taking flight (virtually speaking) on Wednesday, May 3 at 5:30PM (we'll begin gathering around 5:20PM) at the FedEx Hub at 6050 Rockwell Avenue.

The first 25 Chapter members that register for the meeting will have the opportunity to tour and “fly” in the FedEx simulator. As space is extremely limited for this fantastic opportunity, Professional Members will have first option for the excursion. We will be meeting at the main building and then will venture across the street for to the simulator in a couple groups.

Bill Farmer is our host and will share some of the technical, development, and operational experiences he’s accumulated in his years with FedEx. This is sure to be an informative and exciting evening.

April 6, 2005: An Introduction to BlackBerry Solutions

In today's environment, where Internet worms spread across the world in a matter of minutes, security systems--and the network itself--must react instantly. A security system that is fully integrated into all aspects of the network can recognize potential suspicious activity, identify threats, react appropriately, isolate infections, and respond to attacks in a coordinated way.

The Cisco Self-Defending Network strategy allows organizations to use their existing investments in routing, switching, wireless, and security platforms to create a system that will help them identify, prevent, and adapt to both known and unknown security threats.

Elizabeth Howe brings over 4 years of IT recruiting experience to AES. She has experience placing senior level IT experts as well as high tech sales professionals nationwide. Particular areas of expertise include ERP application experts, quality assurance/testing, network administration and security. Elizabeth recently relocated to Alaska with her husband and three cats to better enjoy hiking, backpacking, fishing, and cross-country skiing.

January 5, 2005: Using the OSI Model to Analyze Enterprise Vulnerabilities

The OSI Seven Layer Model will be presented as a template to analyze enterprise vulnerabilities at a management level. From the physical layer, through the application layer and beyond to layer 8, what was developed as an application reference model can serve as a straight forward and holistic tool for addressing business security needs.

December 1, 2004: Digital Video Production
Johnny O'Barr

This will be a live show-and-tell with Johnny showing examples of what you can do and also shooting pictures of AITP members, editing them while you watch, and producing a final cut. Johnny will start as if talking to beginners about digital video and then show all the steps including filming, editing, and publishing digital video. 

  • learn to shoot video (using a mini-dv format)
  • import that video into a Windows based PC
  • edit the video footage with the Adobe Video Collection suite
  • create and output your video to VCD or DVD media
  • and, duplicate your work for private use

Johnny is a technician for Lewis & Lewis Computer Store and was raised in the Mat-Su valley with computers, from the Commodore on up.   His passion has always been media.

We will have a (naturally) Christmas theme with the editing tricks and unbelievable effects.  Multiple copies of MS Office 2003 Professional and a copy of MS Server 2003 will be door prizes.  Join us for a great presentation and WIN!

Would you simply rather ignore conflictive situations than deal with them head on?

This session will help you handle conflictive situations—and people—with confidence by teaching you simple skills you can begin using right away. Identify your conflict strategy. Learn to be assertive and still respectful with “difficult people”. Practice mediation techniques. Above all: Keep your cool when conflict strikes!

Participants will Learn to:

  • Identify their personal conflict style by objectively assessing your strengths and challenges
  • Understand the root cause of most conflicts and how to avoid or minimize them
  • Demonstrate a neutral, articulate, strategic “mode of operation” when conflict strikes with that “difficult” person
  • Keep their cool—even when the other person is driving you crazy!

Brenock, an adjunct professor at UAA and former head of marketing for Providence Health System in Alaska, brings more than a decade of both for-profit and not-for-profit, broad-based business experience to TGC clients from her work with organizations in Indiana, Illinois, Florida and Alaska. Her experience in and background in healthcare, technical and science-based entities, as well as environmental institutions, brings a valuable asset to the Alaskan market.

August 4, 2004: Planning for the Worst, Contingency Planning in Alaska

For the August meeting, our speaker will be Colonel Joel Hooks from Elmendorf AFB. Colonel Hooks is the Director for Command, Control, Communications, and Computer Systems (J6), Alaskan Command. As the senior IT military professional in Alaska, he'll be giving a presentation on homeland defense and disaster preparedness planning activities for the region. Please join us for an enlightening discussion on how the military is doing contingency planning in Alaska.

In this position, Mr. Fisher was the general manager of Sprint's wireless broadband business, with broad operational and product development responsibilities. Mr. Fisher has helped spearhead Sprint's development of existing and future wireless data products, services and technologies. These include all wireless high speed solutions including next generation initiatives such as ITFS/MMDS,802.16, EV-DO, EV-DV and Wi-Fi. Prior to his current position, he has held various business development and legal positions for both Sprint and Hughes Electronics and was an attorney for Latham & Watkins. He has a JD from Yale Law School and a BA in economics from Brigham Young University

As we produce more and more electronically, the issue of how to safeguard our work, and how to keep from infringing upon the others' intellectual property (IP) gains in importance.  Join us February 4th as Anchorage attorney Michael Jungreis gives us an overview of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and how it works to protect our rights and property.

Michael Jungreis has practiced business law in Anchorage for 25 years.  He is a shareholder with the firm Hartig Rhodes Hoge & Lekisch, and is the co-chair of the Alaska Bar Association's section on Intellectual Property.  He has made many presentations on legal topics to both lawyer and non-lawyer groups.  Those topics include electronic commerce and intellectual property.
